1 . In what ways does your media product? . The genre of film that we have persisted with though out this project was to be drama/thriller. We chose this genre of film because all of our group’s favorite films were thrillers and drama based films. Plus we picked thriller because we had a stronger story line for this genre unlike comedy or romantic comedy, which are harder to portray within 2 minutes of filming. Our film is also stated as a thriller because most of our shots are following shots, it is quickly passed in some places and a lot of establishing shots are used for the fist character to show the audience where he is going. The establishing shots also tell part of the story it self as now the audience can recognize that one of the characters is either looking for something as maybe running from something. Our sound will be a action styled sequence of orchestra or even a more modern 2 minute song intro with a fast tempo beat. Our editing is made to look like the first character is walking away from something and also he is being spied on as one of the shots was a long establishing shot with the sight of the character walking down stairs. This shot let alone says a lot about the film as this long shot shows that the character is being seen from a long distance and maybe represents another character that maybe showing surveillance to the first character. Our film is also new and unique as when the second character is shown to the audience it now changes the storyline by far as now the audience cannot tell who is following whom. The name of the film may give away part of the story but with the change in aspect through camera it now may look like the 1st character is following the 2nd. This story line is defiantly original as no other thriller films have included a possible twist in the storyline one of which includes the main aspect of it, which of that is following.
2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Our main social group is totally mixed, being in that case that the two main characters are black and white meaning there is no main ethnic group in the film. This was a good decision as this means that there is no ethnic minority in the film and it is well balanced not only in the film but the audience type shall be mixed. The gender of our social group is both male and female, this is partially represented in male because it’s a thriller and both the main characters are male, but being the fact that the story of it has a drama side to it this entices the female opposition into being included and that the film isn’t just all male action thriller but the film shows more drama as well. The stereotypes in the film have both negative representations as neither one of them can be a neural character within the story line and. either any of them can be following the other this means that both could be a bad character so this means that no ethic genre is represented unequally and is fairly portrayed to the audience. Our social group is a large variety of different types mostly in the difference between both the male and female audience and also the film is for colored and white people so this may mean that we represent two types of social group.
3.What kind of media institution might distribute your product?
My media product would best be distributed by Paramount as they have distributed a lot of British films like Angus thongs and Mean girls both are which British films. Paramount have been going for years and have a lot of support for small production companies and filming companies and start to make them more mainstream. If we couldn’t get help by paramount then the second best option would be the National lottery funding. The National Lottery has help fund a lot of British films and the films they pick the most to help fund are British dramas and thriller. Both of which fall under our category and genre of film so it would be highly likely that they would pick the film.
4.The age variation of our film would be a 15. Other popular drama and thrillers are situated between 15 and 18 ages to attract a larger audience that is suitable for the genre. Being that, if I picked a younger age rating for it like 12 then it would not be suitable at the time, being that a lot of kids films are out and bigger box office films are hitting the cinema, our film would simply be ignored if it were verified for 12 year olds as its not suitable for that age. Being that, if it was an 18 it will be mistaken for a horror as most horror’s are rated as 18’s. So with the age variation of 15 this means that its not recognized as a horror but in fact a drama/thriller. And this age restriction does allow having a wider audience plus also it doesn’t make the film seem to be suitable for children (12 age rating)
5. How did we address the audience?
During our fliming we wanted to make sure the audience knew what was going on, so for then we wanted to make sure there was a large environment shot showing the complete surroundings to which the character is in. This shot reassures the audience where the character is hedding and shows that the character is completely safe. From then the character changed to where he is from the large open environment shot and goes through a large tunnel, this disorientates the audience into thinking where the character has now gone. After that there is a close up of the character walking through and tunnel and the second shot being that the character has came out from beneath the other side. The audience see that this is a new environment and that the next shot is an establishing shot but through the characters eyes. This changes completely who is in control of the story and who knows more about what is going to happen now that the audience dont know what exactly the main objective is in the film and they only know that the first character is looking or running away from something. The first character they meet is character ‘A’ or which we kindly named Jon. Jon is in a blue hood and his facial expression looks either confused or lost. Being that this is a juxtaposition as most people that wear their hoods up are suppose to be intimidating but this character isn’t. This juxtaposition can change the whole story line with in the film as now the audience are being to question what the objective is in the first character.
6. During this course the second most enjoyable part of it, the first being going out and filming, would be the new skills that I have all learned from the course. How to re-format videos and how to make sure the video is compatible with final cut pro. And another skill that I have learnt is how to obtain music footage to go along side the video. The audio really helps to increase the emotions that the director is stressing out towards the audience, whether that being happy or sad, music helps to show true emotion in sound. Using the camera as well as to be another attribute that has to be learnt to truly get the best performance out of the whole entire course, without knowing what to do with a camera can really loose time and effect the whole work.
